HAMPDEN — The Old Town House Committee rehearsed how to present three non-binding warrant articles on Hampden's vacant former town hall before an October 13 Advisory Committee hearing. Members debated whether voters should pick among selling, finding a partner, or retaining the building for civic use as one combined question or three sequential votes, with paper ballots likely needed either way. The building is assessed at $1.46 million but one member pegged realistic market value closer to $700,000; holding it vacant costs the town $60,000 to $75,000 a year.

An engineering estimate put full code-compliant rehabilitation at $8.9 million, against a roughly $4.1 million to $4.5 million "immediate" repair subtotal. A real estate professional, Kevin Jennings, reportedly told the committee the building should be torn down. "If it's non-binding, what are we even trying to get done?" one member asked.

No votes were taken on the substance of the articles.
