Committee backs AI use on old town hall plan
Other Committee · Meeting of February 26, 2026
Hampden study committee backs AI-assisted analysis of old town hall's fate. The Old Town House Study Committee voted unanimously to support a subcommittee's use of ChatGPT and a Google AI notebook tool to sort through options for the vacant, 1930-built town hall, after members Tad Brown and Heather demonstrated an AI-generated summary built from a roughly $7 million 2018 engineering estimate that members said has likely grown closer to $10 million. Members put the annual cost of holding the vacant building at "at least" $70,000, with demolition estimated at $700,000 to $800,000 separate from asbestos abatement.
The committee also discussed a possible partnership with regional developer Westmass and its principal, Jeff Daly, and heard that Kevin Jennings of Jennings Real Estate Services favors soliciting developer interest informally before any formal proposal request. The panel voted to put committee member Amy in charge of a Facebook outreach push to gather resident opinions, with a recommendation to the Select Board targeted for May.
