Hampden panel sets nine options for old building

Hampden committee reviews 287-response survey on the Old Town House building's future. Members of the Hampden Old Town House Committee said 73 percent of respondents have lived in town 15 years or more, and that the top three preservation-related answers combined for 51 percent of responses, compared with 8 percent favoring a sale and 5 percent favoring a fire station conversion. "People were like, yes, we want to save it, but the tax burden is a huge concern," one member said, describing the dominant theme in open-ended comments.
The panel is weighing nine options for the building, from continued town ownership to sale and demolition, and plans a public forum with staffed display boards for each option. Any binding decision will likely wait for a fall town meeting. The committee's next meeting is set for Thursday, April 23, at 6 p.m.
