Hampden panel votes to add sale option for townhouse

Hampden's Old Townhouse Committee adds a sale option, keeps all others alive. Members voted unanimously to add an outright sale as a sixth path for the old town house's future, then rejected motions from committee member Steve to eliminate both the demolition-and-park option and the town-retained-development option, the latter failing on a 0-2 recorded vote. A separate motion by committee member Joe asking the Select Board to form an economic development council around a public-private partnership for the site was defeated 1-3.
Much of the debate centered on the fire department's request for a four- or five-bay station addition that would eat into shared parking, an item the committee sent back for revision rather than approving. Resident Rebecca, owner of Park Cleaners, urged a joint safety audit of the fire station and former school site, asking, "Is it safe for the kids? Is it safe for the community?" The Select Board and fire department meet next June 15; the committee reconvenes June 25.
